Welcome to day one of Breaking Defense Europe!
The site, which is now live, is a direct response to the unprecedented emphasis on defense across Europe. New technologies, new defense enterprises and new strategic scenarios are reshaping the landscape. Simply put, Europe’s interest in defense — from governments, industry and the public — is at a different level than has been seen for decades.
Those increased requirements, investments and opportunities inspired us to think differently about how we cover Europe. We’ve always covered Europe in depth, of course, but the dramatic changes have inspired us to invest in something new and distinct — the site you’re looking at right now, a true European edition, with increased news coverage, to provide the focus and insight the defense community of Europe needs.
Obviously, there’s a lot to cover, but you’re in good hands with a pair of talented, thoughtful and deeply knowledgeable co-editors.
Tim Martin has been Breaking Defense’s European Bureau Chief for three-and-a-half years, leading our coverage of the NATO nations and European industry. He joined Breaking Defense in 2022 after a five-year stint at Shephard Media, where he reported on air warfare and rotary wing aircraft. Based in Belfast, Tim graduated from Queens University Belfast and received his master’s degree from Swansea University in Wales.
Elisabeth Gosselin-Malo is a more recent addition, joining us after serving three years as a Europe correspondent for Defense News. Based in Milan, Italy, she has published work in French, Italian and English, and has passionate interests in drone warfare, unmanned technologies, EU and NATO affairs. Elisabeth graduated from Queens University in Canada and received her master’s degree from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
Tim and Elisabeth’s work will be supplemented by an expansion of our correspondent network, which already features local reporters covering Poland, Ukraine, France, the Nordic and Baltic nations and the United Kingdom.
If it’s about Europe, you’ll find it here — but of course, we don’t want to cut you off from the rest of the Breaking Defense team’s fantastic work. You’ll also see a button towards the top of the site that will let you toggle over to the comprehensive BreakingDefense.com, and all our content, across all regions. And since we know they’re key regions for European interest, news from the Middle East and Asia will also appear, accessed through the navigation bar.
