The Australian Department of Defence has formalised a three-year agreement with DroneShield to strengthen the nation’s counter-drone capabilities through joint research and technology sharing.

As part of the bilateral agreement, DroneShield and Australian Defence, through the Defence Science and Technology Group, will exchange data on emerging drone technologies.

The partners will share access to testing articles, ranges, and other facilities.

The Australian Government stated that collaborating with industry to share counter-drone research provides “significant benefits” for national security and supports innovation in the domestic defence sector.

Chief defence scientist professor Tanya Monro said: “Defence is pleased to partner with DroneShield on development and data of emerging drone technologies. We know that counter-drone technology continues to evolve rapidly, by working together we can stay ahead of emerging threats and deliver innovative solutions that protect Australia’s interests.

”Counter-drone technology is critical to keeping our ADF members safe, and that’s why Defence is committed to working with industry so that we can ensure our soldiers, sailors and aviators are provided with the most advanced technology available.”

The agreement follows DroneShield’s recent selection as a supplier for Project LAND 156’s Line of Effort 3.

This programme forms part of the Department of Defence’s broader strategy to address risks associated with small drones in domestic security environments.

Recently, DroneShield announced the appointment of Michael Powell as its new chief operating officer.

The appointment comes at a time of expansion for the company, which has reported increased engagement from defence, government, and critical-infrastructure customers in Europe and the US.

The company has also expanded its manufacturing capacity at its Alexandria, New South Wales facility.
