AeroVironment has received a three-year contract worth $97.4m under the US Army’s Aviation and Missile Technology Consortium to develop and deliver the Generative Environment for the Next Era of Spectral Imaging Stimulators, known as GENESIS.

The programme will create a Hardware-in-the-Loop test environment for validating missile defence and electro-optical/infrared sensor systems.

AeroVironment said it will design and integrate prototype test environments at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, including flight motion table and cryogenic space chamber facilities.

The company said the system will support the next generation of Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) and provide a single environment for planning, modelling and validation across space, air and missile defence domains.

The work will support the Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center, or DEVCOM AvMC, and its government partners.

According to the company, GENESIS will combine multi-spectral projection, high frame-rate imaging, precision optics and facility control systems to reproduce operational environments for testing.

It said Hardware-in-the-Loop and scene generation connect physical hardware with simulated settings to test sensors, guidance and control systems.

AeroVironment said the environment is intended to help DEVCOM AvMC assess technologies more quickly, refine performance, reduce risk and support the industrial base for future military applications.

AV Space, Cyber and Directed Energy president Mary Clum said: “True innovation in defence starts long before technology reaches the battlefield—it starts in how we test, refine, and prove it.

“By creating realistic, repeatable, and scalable testing ecosystems, we’re helping the Army accelerate innovation, strengthen deterrence, and ensure our warfighters maintain a decisive advantage in every domain.”

Last month, AeroVironment secured a $186m delivery order from the US Army for its Switchblade 600 Block 2 and Switchblade 300 Block 20 explosively formed penetrator (EFP) loitering munition systems.
