WASHINGTON — Northrop Grumman has quietly asked the Federal Trade Commission to remove restrictions on its solid rocket motor business, in a move that competitor Lockheed Martin opposes, setting up a rare regulatory battle between two of the world’s largest defense firms. The FTC’s decision could have implications not only for the defense industrial base, but for the Pentagon’s race to ramp up the production of missiles and backfill its stockpiles — an endeavor dependent on also ramping up the manufacture of solid rocket motors (SRMs). On April 2, Northrop petitioned the Federal Trade Commission to drop a 2018 consent…

For years, the rivalry between China and Japan has been treated as a recurring diplomatic irritant. Historical grievances stemming from Japan’s invasion of China in the early 20th century have always created animosity in the relationship. Despite the general sense of bitterness and frequent tensions over disputed islands, China and Japan managed to maintain a deep, intertwined economic relationship. But the latest escalation is different. It hinges on a broader strategic question of whether Japan remains a restrained post-war power or becomes a mightier military actor in the balance of power against China. Tokyo appears to have chosen the latter…

India is accelerating its efforts to field next‑generation missile systems that will redefine its strategic capabilities. At a recent event, DRDO chief Samir V Kamat confirmed that the country is simultaneously pursuing both a hypersonic glide missile and a hypersonic cruise missile. These systems are designed to deliver unprecedented speed and manoeuvrability, placing them well beyond the reach of existing defensive networks. The defining feature of these new weapons is speed. Hypersonic missiles travel at more than Mach 5, over five times the speed of sound, compared to the BrahMos cruise missile which operates at Mach 2.8 to Mach 3. This leap…
