A critical U.S. Air Force radar plane damaged by an Iranian attack this past weekend is a significant loss and harms the military’s battlespace awareness for missions in the Middle East and beyond, defense experts say. An E-3 Sentry, an Airborne Early Earning and Control System aircraft or AWACS, was damaged during a March 27 attack on Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia, a U.S. official confirmed to Defense One. Photos circulated on social media purporting to be of the aircraft showed a smoldering E-3 split in half on a runway. A U.S. Central Command spokesperson declined to comment on the…

Iran’s ongoing war with the United States and Israel has put its ballistic missile (BM)-centric defence posture in the spotlight, testing its depth and its efficacy in real-time. Tehran built that posture over decades – investing in solid-fuel rocket development, low-cost loitering munitions, and a decentralized command structure – and it has imposed meaningful costs on a US-led coalition, even as Iran’s launch rates have declined sharply under strikes targeting its stockpiles. However, the military efficacy of Iran’s BM employment remains debatable. The strikes have generated strategic and perceptual effects, but their tactical impact has been limited compared to what…

India and Russia are advancing their long-standing defence partnership with the development of a new BrahMos cruise missile variant capable of reaching targets up to 800 kilometres away. This marks a significant leap from the current versions, which generally have a range of just over 450 kilometres. The extended reach would allow India to strike deep into adversary territory while remaining outside the envelope of hostile air defence systems, thereby enhancing its strategic deterrence posture. The upgraded missile is being jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya. Despite the increase in range, the missile will retain its…
