Across aviation, ground systems, and surface and subsurface maritime platforms, the demand for edge computing power relentlessly and exponentially moves in one direction: more data processed closer to the mission. Operators need new communications pathways, autonomy tools and AI-enabled mission applications, alongside faster software-driven upgrades at the tactical edge. There’s a problem, though, as the hardware architectures inside many of those air, ground, and naval systems – the boxes, in other words – were designed for an era where it commonly took years for upgrades and capability integrations to reach the battlefield. That reality is no longer acceptable. To leap…
Iran’s state-backed hackers are sharing more cyber tools and using AI to polish disinformation and recruitment messages since the U.S. and Israel launched their war on the country, Israel’s top cyberdefense official said in an interview with Nextgov.Yossi Karadi, who leads Israel’s National Cyber Directorate, also said on Tuesday that he is pressing major AI labs for controlled access to powerful models like Anthropic’s Mythos, arguing that governments need the same tools attackers are seeking to adopt. In the last year, Tehran’s hacking units have increasingly “begun to talk to each other, and then collaborate with each other, and then even sometimes…
Since not long after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the democratic world has largely watched passively as China has been the main enabler of Moscow’s war effort. Despite knowing about Russia’s reliance on China, the world’s inaction boils down to the collective dependence on China’s control and dominance of global trade and technology supply chains. With democracies having little appetite to take on any economic risk, China’s support for Russia continues, and so too does the war. Initial hopes that China might be able to convince its junior authoritarian partner to scale back the war quickly faded as…

The Israeli Air Force (IAF) has received a major upgrade to its vital but aging air refueling capabilities, as the first American-made KC-46 tanker was delivered to Israel today. For Jerusalem, this news could not come soon enough. But the Pentagon cannot rest on its laurels, and needs to consider new, smart ideas for how to enable Israel’s tanker force to grow in the coming years. Israel’s current inventory of refueling tankers is reported to include no more than seven Boeing 707 “Re’em” aircraft. Originally commercial craft, Israel began acquiring and modifying the planes for refueling purposes in 1979. These aircraft are likely…
This four-part series examines the debate over wartime operational control (OPCON) transfer from four angles: the structural origins of the impasse (Part 1), the military case for transfer (Part 2), the key design issues requiring resolution (Part 3), and a vision for the alliance after transfer (Part 4). Taken together, the series charts a path toward the mature partnership that a “Koreanization of Korean defense” would require. The final part of this series steps back from design details to ask the larger question: what kind of alliance will come out the other side of OPCON transfer? The answer is not…

IZMIR, Turkey — In the aftermath of Iran’s drone and missile attacks on its neighbors Turkish firms are receiving increased interest from Gulf states in their short-range air defenses and counter-drone technologies, officials from two companies told Breaking Defense. Murat Kurtulus, deputy general manager of missile production giant Roketsan, said that his company received requests from Gulf states to procure two systems in particular, the firm’s Cirit missiles and Alka directed energy weapon system. “Yes, we have some requests from the governments after recent developments,” Kurtulus said. He noted that both Cirit, unveiled at the Saha defense expo in May,…
