The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has entered into agreements with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Pvt Ltd (EPHL) for the purchase of Trawl Assembly equipment for T-72 and T-90 tanks.

The contracts, valued at approximately Rs9.75bn ($104.33m), were signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh on 21 April 2026.

BEML, a multi-technology ‘Schedule A’ company under the MoD, said it received a contract worth Rs5.9bn to supply indigenous trawl assemblies that will be deployed with the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 tanks.

Machinery manufacturer EPHL said on LinkedIn that it won a Rs3.85bn contract to manufacture 70 sets of trawl assemblies for T-72 and T-90 tanks.

The contracts aim to decrease reliance on imports and supports the Atmanirbhar Bharat or self-reliant India initiative.

The Trawl Assembly for T-72 and T-90 tanks are developed in collaboration with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), to support the Indian Army in breaching minefields.

The system is equipped with multi-layered mine-clearing system, enabling the creation of vehicle safe lanes through minefields with anti-tank mines fitted with proximity magnetic fuses. This enhances mobility, survivability, and operational effectiveness of forces, BEML said.

Shantanu Roy, chairman and managing director of BEML was quoted as saying: “Our collaboration with DRDO is a testament to the strength of India’s defence R&D ecosystem.

“This order reinforces our steadfast commitment to the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and our resolve to equip the nation’s armed forces with reliable, high-quality, and indigenously developed solutions.”

Last month, the Defence Acquisition Council approved military procurement proposals worth approximately Rs2.38tn.
