Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited, the defence arm of Bharat Forge, and Paramount unveiled the Simha 4×4 armoured vehicle at Eurosatory 2026 in Paris, positioning it as a modular, multi-role platform engineered for global defence markets and rapid local industrialisation.
The launch underscores India’s ambition to stand alongside established defence industrial nations while offering partner countries sovereign manufacturing capability.
The unveiling took place on 16 June 2026 at Eurosatory, the world’s largest ground forces defence exhibition. The Simha 4×4 was presented as a next-generation light armoured multipurpose vehicle designed jointly by Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited and Paramount, combining Indian industrial scale with South African defence expertise.
The collaboration reflects a deliberate strategy to merge design innovation, manufacturing capacity, and market access in a way neither company could achieve alone.
The name Simha, derived from the Sanskrit word for lion, carries strong resonance in Indian military and cultural symbolism. The vehicle sits within the light armoured multipurpose category, bridging the gap between unprotected utility vehicles and heavier infantry fighting vehicles.
This class of platform has gained prominence globally, with examples such as the American Joint Light Tactical Vehicle and Australia’s Hawkei, because of its versatility and cost-effectiveness. A single adaptable platform reduces the number of distinct vehicle types a military must procure, train on, and maintain, thereby simplifying logistics and lowering overall fleet costs.
The Simha 4×4’s defining feature is its modular architecture. Built around a reconfigurable mission payload interface, it can be adapted to roles ranging from reconnaissance and troop transport to command and control, medical evacuation, and special operations.
This modularity allows integration of emerging technologies and upgrades to meet evolving threats without requiring complete platform replacement, addressing one of the most persistent challenges in defence procurement. Eric Ichikowitz, Senior Vice President of Paramount, emphasised that the vehicle combines protection, mobility, modularity, and affordability, evolving alongside operational needs.
Amit Kalyani, Vice Chairman and Joint Managing Director of Bharat Forge, contextualised the launch within India’s broader ambition to establish itself as a credible peer of established defence industrial nations.
He highlighted that the Simha 4×4 is “Europeanised by Design” and built around NATO-qualified aggregates, engineered for rapid industrialisation in partner nations. This reflects India’s intent to deliver uncompromising protection and tactical mobility while enabling partner countries to build capability on their own soil.
The companies stressed that industrialisation in partner nations is not an afterthought but a central design priority. Paramount has extensive experience establishing local assembly and manufacturing partnerships in Africa, while Bharat Forge provides the industrial backbone in India.
Together, they present the Simha 4×4 as genuinely localisable rather than merely importable, aligning with governments’ priorities for sovereign manufacturing, local employment, and reduced dependence on foreign supply chains.
Operationally, the Simha 4×4 is suited for urban warfare, reconnaissance, internal security, border protection, special operations, command and control, and troop transport. Its adaptability addresses procurement challenges faced by militaries with constrained budgets, limited maintenance infrastructure, and diverse mission requirements.
By reconfiguring payloads and mission systems rather than acquiring multiple specialised platforms, ministries of defence can achieve significant reductions in total cost of ownership.
The vehicle was developed in record time using advanced digital engineering tools, with rigorous validation and testing processes ensuring reliability. Its design builds on proven aggregates and NATO-qualified components, ensuring compliance with global military standards.
The emphasis on rapid industrialisation and sovereign capability development makes it particularly attractive to markets in Africa, South Asia, and other developing regions, where governments seek both operational performance and local manufacturing.
The launch at Eurosatory 2026, attended by senior leadership from both companies, signals their intent to compete not only in overlooked markets but also in any region where governments demand adaptable, affordable, and locally producible protected mobility platforms.
The Simha 4×4 thus represents both a technological achievement and a strategic statement of India’s growing defence industrial maturity.
