The US Department of State has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine, authorising Hawk Missile System Sustainment and associated equipment and services at an estimated cost of $108.1m.

Ukraine seeks to procure erectable mast trailers, maintenance and major modifications, spare parts, consumables, repair and return support.

It also covers US Government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistics services.

According to the Department’s announcement, these items and services are intended for Ukraine’s FrankenSAM Hawk missile systems.

Sierra Nevada Corporation has been named as the principal contractor for the programme.

The proposed sale aligns with US foreign policy and national security objectives, supporting “the security of a partner country that is a force for political and economic stability in Europe.”

The State Department notes the sale will “improve Ukraine’s capability to meet current and future threats by further equipping it to conduct self-defence and regional security missions with a more robust integrated air defence capability,” while also confirming Ukraine’s capacity to integrate the systems and services into its armed forces.

The Department of State has indicated that the transaction would not affect the overall military balance in the region. It also reports that there will be no adverse impact on US defence readiness as a result of the proposed sale.

The Hawk, or Homing All-the-Way Killer, is a medium-range surface-to-air missile system first fielded by the US Army in 1959 and operated by it until the mid-1990s.

More than a dozen countries have obtained Hawk systems through the US Foreign Military Sales programme.

This latest approval comes after the US State Department authorised potential Foreign Military Sales of support services for Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and Hawk Phase III missile systems, valued at $322m in July last year.

In 2024, the US also approved a $138m FMS for sustainment of Hawk Phase III missile systems.
