WASHINGTON — A drone wingman built by General Atomics has resumed flying roughly one month after crashing in the California desert shortly after takeoff. In a press release Thursday, the company said its YFQ-44A aircraft “returned to flight testing following a round of safety reviews and software enhancements.” Nobody was injured in the April 6 crash, which, according to the firm, stemmed from “an autopilot miscalculation for the weight and center of gravity of the aircraft, prompting a software remediation.” The drone is being developed for the Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program. According to an Air Force official…
The Pentagon announced the Replicator Initiative with fanfare in 2023, aiming to field vast numbers of affordable, expendable drones as a strategic counter to China. However, by 2025, the program was limping along due to congressional criticism over stalled progress and the absence of a permanent institutional home or consistent funding. The Pentagon officially dissolved Replicator in late 2025, absorbing it into the newly minted Defense Autonomous Warfare Group, or DAWG. Originally allocated a modest $225.9 million in the fiscal year 2026 budget, DAWG was widely expected to be just another iterative defense working group. But the Trump administration’s FY27 budget request has shattered those expectations.…
China’s early economic reforms, led by Deng Xiaoping in the late 1970s, are frequently cited as the main basis for comparison when it comes to North Korea’s economic improvement measures implemented by Kim Jong Il and later continued by Kim Jong Un. However, despite certain institutional similarities, head-to-head comparisons are deceptive. To understand North Korea’s current economic structure, it is first necessary to examine the original socialism of the Soviet Union upon which the North Korean system was built, as well as the ideological transformations that emerged following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc. After World…
Pune-based defence technology company NIBE Limited has reached a significant milestone with the successful free trial demonstrations of its indigenous loitering munition system, Vayu Astra-1, for the Indian Army, reported Girish Linganna of Mathrubhumi. These trials were conducted in April at two demanding locations — the Pokhran firing range in Rajasthan and the high-altitude terrain of Joshimath (Malari) in Uttarakhand. What makes this achievement particularly noteworthy is that the demonstrations were carried out without any financial commitment from the Army, reflecting the company’s confidence in its creation.A loitering munition is essentially a smart drone capable of circling patiently in the sky…

JERUSALEM — Israel Aerospace Industries has unveiled a new naval defense concept, based around placing networked, containerized systems on existing vessels. Called Diamond, IAI in a May 20 announcement described the technology as a new “distributed warfare solution that expands the power of modern frigates” that will give the ships “greater firepower, operational flexibility and rapid response.” In an announcement video, IAI showed off a series of what look like commercial shipping containers, which featured a variety of different systems, including missile interceptors, loitering munitions, or sensors on a small mast. Those containers are placed on the deck space of…

Seoul is reportedly preparing to announce a roadmap for its nuclear-powered submarine program, turning what was once a long-running strategic aspiration into a more immediate policy question. Naval nuclear propulsion raises non-proliferation questions about fuel, safeguards, and nuclear latency. But treating Seoul’s pursuit only as a sign of hidden nuclear ambitions risks missing the larger issue: whether a U.S. ally facing a rapidly nuclearizing North Korea can remain non-nuclear while still believing that it has enough means to defend itself. That question has become more urgent as North Korea expands not only its nuclear arsenal, but also the ways it…
